THE MATRIARCH

Omak, the epitome of love and tenderness who brought Abang Bosa into this world 5 months before General Percival forced General Yamashita to his knees in Singapore. Omak nourished us with utmost care in severe times of need during the Japanese Occupation, cradling me (kendong) and the other siblings in tow escaping the enemy into the hills, thereby surviving on pisang bakar lenyet and ubi kayu robuih in the face of scarce rice and condensed milk chop junjung. Abang Bosa changed his name 3 times to overcome the onslaught of excruciating kembung perut due to this wartime infant nourishment. Atok faced the toughest times shielding Omak from the Japanese soldiers roaming the kampungs for "mee-sang" (women).
